Every time I return to Seattle, I remember my time at Sand Point and Todd Shipyard. Worst memory was waking up on the floor next to Yakima Annie. Worked for Chief Hill who taught me a lot. Never would have made first class without him. Great times.

It was my second duty station. It was an honor to be selected for a commissioning crew. Had great liberty in San Diego and Seattle. My sidekick John Paul Schosser, postal clerk and I enjoyed hitting the beach. Left for the Boston thinking it would go to North Atlantic. Ended up back in the Med. Shipped over for B school. Made YN2 sent to Ras Taunura Saudi Arabia. Returned to NORVA to SACLANT. Left Navy as YN1 to go to BU. Became a journalist and retired as a JOC.

We trained in San Diego, then went to Bremerton, WA for more training and shakedown cruise in 1964. Transited West Coast, great time in Acapulco, Panama Canal to homeport in Norfolk. First Med Cruise was outstanding. Transferred USS Boston hoping for North Atlantic cruise went back to the Med.

Have been to the reunions in Branson & Charleston.. What a good feeling it gives me to get reunited with past shipmates and meet others. My time on the Byrd 2yrs went by so fast that seems unreal. About the only time in my life that I would like to repeat.. Thanks MATES, all of you were great..

I knew when I was there that it would be the best memories I would have. I was right. The people were great, the travel was good and there was usually something interesting going on. Even the food was OK. Only the chickensh-t was a little annoying. Altogether It was great.

I knew when I joined the Navy it would be my most fun time. I was right!! Especially on the USS Byrd. The people were great, the travel was great, and there was usually something interesting going on. I wish that I could redo it. Maybe just for a few months.

Part of pre-commissioning crew. Went aboard prior to the rest of the crew to string bunks. Part of the honor guard for commissioning ceremony. Helped carry "the cake" and escorted Mrs. Richard E. Byrd which was quite an honor. I have some commissioning books and photos.
